Recycled Art Trail in South Devon, July – Sept ’09

Posted on June 29th, 2009

Now in its fifth year, art works created for TRAIL will be in place along the South Devon coast linking Shaldon, Teignmouth and Dawlish for seven weeks from Sunday 19 July to Sunday 6 September. TRAIL, A Recycled Art in Landscape project, will feature dozens of structures created by local and national artists as well as Devon community project groups.

Predominantly made from waste materials and designed to highlight concerns about the environment and climate change, the individual sculptures showcase the creative talents of the artists involved and an opportunity for the public to experience art in unexpected places.

Visitors to this wonderful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will find the stunning coastal backdrop the perfect setting for this diverse and unusual range of artists’ creations. Among the many original works on display will be The Hub, a giant ammonite fossil made from 1,500 old hub caps; a Tyre Rainbow and a Mosaic Bench. Another striking sculpture will be a huge sphere created entirely from around 2,500 tin cans.

TRAIL has been working with a number of community groups and these sculpture projects will also be open to the public during this annual event, including a butterfly mobile park and conservation project in ‘Homeyards’, Shaldon Botanical Gardens; a ‘mini’ Dawlish town trail highlighting the plight of the bumblebee, and an insect garden in Teignmouth featuring a ‘flying’ tarantula and his friends.

In addition, TRAIL will encompass an exciting extravaganza of ‘Wearable Art’, showcased in the Carlton Theatre in Teignmouth on 27 July. Artists have let their imaginations run riot to create an array of extreme costumes from those made of bubble wrap to others inspired by mythical sea creatures.

Tickets for the catwalk show and collaborative performances featuring music and poetry are available from July 1st at Teignmouth Tourist Information Centre, Tel: 01626 215666. There will also be exhibits at various venues and galleries throughout the town from 9 August to 6 September.
