Musica Reale Festival in Montalcino and Siena

Posted on June 24th, 2010

The fourth season of the Musica Reale international festival of chamber music will take place between the 9th and 15th of July. This year’s event will host the internationally acclaimed pianist Ronald Brautigam (highly praised for his Beethoven interpretations) and the prominent documentary filmmaker Phil Grabsky.

Chamber music at the highest international level will play a leading role in this summer’s cultural activities in the Province of Siena, thanks to the 4th annual edition of Musica Reale’s festival, to take place in Montalcino and Siena between the 9th and 15th of July.

Organized by the Musica Reale Association (Chamber Music by Members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam), with contributions and patronage of the City of Montalcino, the Province of Siena and Villa di Geggiano, the festival will present a rich offering of classical and contemporary chamber music.

Programs will include works by Berio, Dvorák, Beethoven, Francaix, Dohnanyi, Lutoslowski, Schumann, Nielsen and Mozart. The concerts are performed exclusively by prominent members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam according to the conception developed by artistic director and festival founder Peter Sokole.

Each year, different members of the orchestra are invited to participate in the festival. The availability of all the instruments of the orchestra makes for a particularly varied and creative programming, the choice of repertoire being practically unlimited.

Rehearsals, which take place in Teatro degli di Astrusi at 10.30 on the morning of each concert, are open to music students. Between the 9th and 13th July three concerts will be held in Teatro degli Astrusi in Montalcino (9,10,13 July) with a fourth concert to be given in the formal gardens of Villa di Geggiano near Siena.

Guests of honor will be the renowned pianist Ronald Brautigam, who will perform music of Beethoven and Schumann on the 10th and 13th July in Montalcino, and the 15th July at Villa di Geggiano, and the documentary filmmaker Phil Grabsky, who will introduce screenings of his film “In Search of Beethoven” and respond to questions from the public.

Grabsky’s film, which includes contributions from many of the foremost interpreters of Beethoven’s music (among whom Roger Norrington, Ronald Brautigam, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Noseda) sheds a new light on the legendary composer. The film will be showed twice, once in Montalcino on 12th July, and again at Villa di Geggiano on the 14th. Both screenings will be introduced by Phil Grabsky and preceded by a musical introduction. The film will be shown in the original English version with Italian subtitles.

All events (except the film at Villa di Geggiano) begin at 19.00 and be preceded by an aperitif with local products starting at 18.15 on the terrace of the theatre in Montalcino, or in the garden of Villa di Geggiano, included in the ticket price. The film evening at Villa di Geggiano will begin at 21.00 (doors open at 20.00).
