First Padstow Arts Festival, 2nd – 4th October 2009
The first Padstow Arts Festival celebrates the life and works of two former eminent Padstow residents, Sir Malcolm Arnold and Sir John Betjeman. Both were among the most vital and creative spirits in post-war Britain, with a real genius for engaging with their audiences.
The beautiful Cornish town of Padstow welcomes Festival participants including Cornish-born, international opera singer Benjamin Luxon, the prestigious British composer John McCabe, the Salieri String Quartet and the Truro Cathedral Choir, celebrating the anniversaries of Mendelssohn, Purcell and Haydn and singing a rare choral work by Malcolm Arnold.
Festival Producer, Edward Clark leads a discussion on the lives and legacies of Malcolm Arnold and John Betjeman, to include the participants above and Matthew Taylor, Festival Artistic Director, distinguished composer and conductor.
The Mount Charles Band will perform, on the Padstow Quay, a range of works for brass band by Malcolm Arnold including his famous march, The Padstow Lifeboat.
Venues include the beautiful St Petroc’s Church in the town and Prideaux Place, a 400 year old Manor, overlooking the town.
The Festival has been produced with the help and cooperation of Padstow Town Council, Peter and Elisabeth Prideaux-Brune, Katherine Arnold and Rick and Jill Stein.
