Glasgow Gets Ready to Party Through the Winter
As memories of a not-so-hot summer fade, the city is gearing up for a spectacular season of events as details of Winterfest Glasgow 2008 are announced.
Winterfest Glasgow gets off to a dazzling start with the hugely popular Glasgow’s Christmas Lights switch on, while Glasgow on Ice and a massive stage filled with seasonal entertainment will transform George Square into a winter wonderland. Other highlights include a traditional outdoor ceilidh at this year’s Shindig as part of the St Andrew’s Day celebrations and thousands of revellers are set to party in the square as we welcome in 2009 at Glasgow’s Hogmanay.
The headline act for this year’s extravaganza is Paolo Nutini, the Paisley-born star who will perform in both Glasgow and Edinburgh on Hogmanay, as he makes a mad dash between the two cities. This year, Paolo has toured around the globe playing some amazing shows in China, San Diego, Japan’s Summersonic festival as well as headlining Hydro Connect Festival, performing a special pre Olympics show for Puma and the Jamaican Athletics team, the Montreux Jazz festival with Quincy Jones and the amazing support slot at the Hollywood Bowl with Etta James. Other acts for the big night will be announced at a later date. Hogmanay tickets cost £15 and go on sale at 9am on Saturday, 8 November.
Welcoming the news, the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Bob Winter, said:
Winterfest Glasgow is bigger and better and what better way to launch it than with the news that local boy, Paolo Nutini will be wowing the crowds as we welcome in 2009.
This year’s programme will turn George Square into a winter wonderland and there are a huge range of events for all of the family – and what’s more, the vast majority are free.
From the Glasgow’s Christmas Lights switch on to Shindig, as well as family fun days and Baby’s First Christmas, we can help to take some of the gloom out of the dark days and dreary nights with some sparkling entertainment.
A firm favourite with families across the city, Glasgow’s Christmas Lights will be switched on at George Square on Sunday, 16 November. Tickets are free and will be released on a first-come, first-served basis at 9am on Saturday, 25 October from the Ticketmaster outlet in Buchanan Galleries. Demand, as always, is expected to be extremely high and tickets are strictly limited to four per household.
Winterfest Glasgow is a result of a partnership between Glasgow City Council, Real Radio, the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Culture and Sport Glasgow and the Scottish Government.
