KOCCA to introduce Korean Manhwa at Palazzo D’Accursio in Bologna
The Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA, Representative: Kyung-mo An) is hosting a Special Exhibition on Korean Manhwa under the theme of Manhwa: The Exiting New Discovery at Palazzo D’Accursio in Bologna for 2 weeks from Monday, March 23rd to Sunday, April 5th in commemoration of the 100th birth of Korean Manhwa.
Korea will participate as the Guest of Honor in the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2009 at the Bologna Fair Centre, March 23rd through 26th.
The Special Exhibition on Korean Manhwa is designed to offer an overview of the past and present of Korean ‘Manhwa’ as a brand. It is composed of:
- Road – History of Korean Manhwa’ s Centennial
- Chic - 4 Frame Zone – A Display of artworks by 4 Korean manhwa authors (Dong-hwa Kim, Young-man Hur, Tai-ho Yoon, So-young Lee)
- Next Generation – Introduction of Korean Digital Online Manhwa
- Playful – Introduction of Toon Artwork
- Meeting – A Display of Korean Books Translated into Italian
The agency also intends to grab the attention of visitors and enhance understanding about manhwa by establishing an ‘Author’s Room’, a replica of manhwa artist’s studio, where Korean manhwa authors whose artworks are presented in the book fair will draw comics.
Also on display will be Korean books translated into Italian which are donated by Italian publishers such as JPOP, Panini, and Flashbook to the agency to allow visitors to read them freely.
The agency expects this fair to be a chance to occupy the European digital comic market in which Korea entered only recently, setting Korea’s digital manhwa boosted by Korea’s outstanding digital media environment as a major theme for this exhibition.
In its the 46th edition this year, the fair will see seven Korean representative publishers including Haksan Publishing and Daewon CI and 5 animation and character companies including Iconix Entertainment jointly operate Korean Manhwa Pavilion and host both manhwa and character exhibitions at the same time.
“This book fair will serve as an opportunity to raise awareness further about Korean Manhwa as a brand which made an impressive debut in European countries through the 2003 Angouleme International Comic Festival and to prove that Korea is a digital manhwa powerhouse,” said Jin-gyu Kim, director of Industry Promotion Division of KOCCA with great ambition.
